It was a great experience for our boys to Explore the prestigious Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala Museum and Herbal Garden as part of our continued efforts to Experience Science rather than mugging up the lessons from textbooks. Our Students got the chance the touch and see the plants mentioned in their Botany textbook, under the leadership of Dr.Haris P, Botanist and Hon.Principal of RIS.
Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier Museum was established in 2002 as part of the centenary celebrations of Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal. The Museum preserves the personalia of Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier and marks the important milestones in the history of Arya Vaidya Sala. It documents the process of renaissance movements in the field of Ayurveda and epitomizes the history of Ayurveda in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The heritage building that houses the museum was constructed in 1924 to provide hospital facilities for patients, the first of its kind in Ayurvedic treatment.
An exhibition cum conservation herbal garden of 6 acres containing 1100 species are maintained for doctors, botanists, scholars, students, etc. to see and study medicinal plants. Several annual, biennial and perennial are cultivated there for in-house consumption. AVS is now self-sufficient in certain items like Atalotakam, Karinkurinji, Nagadandi, and Brahmi. There are about a hundred other medicinal plants which are cultivated for supplementing production needs.
